and tomorrow makes five....
Five years ago today, it was all the same. I had my life, my job, my friends. I lived in a city where I thought all the good men had moved away. It was winter. I worked in a basement. I couldn't afford to heat my uninsulated house. I spent hours writing my thesis with gloves on. The passenger side door to my car froze shut. I had to drive alone. After work, I went upstairs to the bar. I ran into a friend who I had seen with a cute guy earlier. I said "Is that your boyfriend? He's cute." She said no and asked if I wanted to go out with him. I said no. I drank some more and then went home with allergies to all the cigarette smoke.
Five years ago tomorrow, I woke up and it was the same. I went to work. I got off early. I met my friend's friend. We drank a pitcher or two. We listened to Hank Williams and Johnny Cash on the jukebox. I sat on his lap. He climbed in through my driver's side door. I didn't have to drive alone. Or sleep alone. Or worry about the heat any longer.
Five years ago day after tomorrow, I woke up and it was all different. And it still is. And wonderful. Happy anniversary (tomorrow), C.

holidaze
it's wednesday.
i'm having a cup of tea.
the train whistle is blowing in the background
the music hums.
it is almost Christmas -
the unwrapping of gifts, the red glow of the tree decorations,
bottle after bottle of wine, my mother's laugh,
a puzzle covering the dining table for days,
warm blankets,
snow.

The Long Winter Road
The first of December. The air is biting. The fog is thick and hovers over the city, adding the weight to our shoulders. The weight of winter. Of the holidays. We sip coffee. Red wine. Whiskey. We make elaborate dinners. Some kind of stew. Or go out to hear our friends play music. We fill the hours, dark past five, with activities to add some light. To lift the heavy blankets. To get us through until Spring.
